What is Supportive Housing?
The new Broward Behavioral Health Coalition (BBHC) funded Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) program is administered by Henderson Behavioral Health and, in addition to adults, the program serves young adults with behavioral health and/or substance abuse disorders who are connected with One Community Partnership 2 (OCP2) system of care grant’s TIP services. BBHC selected this program to offer evidence-based Permanent Supportive Housing throughout Broward County utilizing the Housing First approach as developed by Pathways to Housing and endorsed by SAMHSA per the EBP KIT.
The Permanent, Supportive Housing (PSH) program offers voluntary, flexible supports to help people with mental health and co-occurring substance use disorders to choose, get and keep housing that is safe, affordable and integrated in the community. Central to the approach is community integration with the belief that people should have the right to live in a home of their own, without any special rules or service requirements. Permanent housing should meet their needs and preferences. In PSH, tenants are tenants, not residents of a program or consumers of an agency. A functional separation exists between housing and service provision. PSH programs work with landlords to establish leases for the individuals, leverage subsidy/vouchers, and provide tenancy supports via Housing Specialist services to individuals living in their apartments to ensure long term tenure.
How to refer a young adult?
To be eligible for this program, the young adult must:
The Henderson Housing Specialist determines program eligibility, assists the client in identifying and securing a rental that meets their individualized needs and provides on-going financial assistance for that scattered-site rental unit. Initially, Henderson’s PSH program allocated 15 slots for young adults and recently received additional funding to serve eight more young adults, totaling 23 transition-aged youth slots.
